The Mikado Blu-Ray
Gilbert and Sullivan The Mikado Blu-Ray Mitchell Butel, Kaneen Breen, Taryn Fiebig, Warwick Fyfe, Jacqueline Dark, Richard Alexander, Opera Australia Chorus, Orchestra Victoria, Brian Castles-Onion OPERA AUSTRALIA | OPOZ56015 | 5060266600241 | BLU-RAY
‘Opera Australia’s lavish production of The Mikado succeeds in doing justice to the colourful whimsy and pointed fakery of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic…Mitchell Butel’s Ko-Ko is nerdy, brash…but ultimately loveable and manages to carry the show with the help of Kanen Breen’s old-boy charm as Nanky-Poo. Butel’s physical performance and vocal style recall his leading role as Princeton in Avenue Q…Taryn Febig’s Yum-Yum is sweet but never steals the scene…Warwick Fyfe gives a plump, brooding and understated performance as befits the Lord High Everything Else, while Jacqueline Dark’s jilted lover Katisha switches disconcertingly from demonic to diva in a way that is most entertaining. Richard Alexander’s brief but memorable turn as the Mikado captures all the ersatz empathy and ruthless disinterest of the ruling class that Gilbert no doubt hoped to insinuate.’ (Australian Stage). ‘Add another name to Australia’s thriving classical guitar scene…Tsiboulski is the complete guitarist. His playing possesses a highly controlled, honed refinement, but he rises above the technical demands to reach a new level of concentrated, inner thought…The standout is Koehne’s rhapsodic A Closed World of Fine Feelings and Grand Design, which Tsiboulski plays with exquisite, perfectly judged phrases and aching tenderness. He is excellent, too, with Edwards’ Guitar Dances and Blackwattle Caprices…Sculthorpe’s ruminative From Kakadu and Djilile acquire an almost spiritual power.’ (The Australian, 5-star review)

First volume in a beautiful new series from Chandos. The Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen was a contemporay of Edvard Grieg and is best known for his Norwegian Rhapsodies. Open to the new musical trends launched by Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner, he also wrote a significant body of other joyful, lyrical and Romantic music from the pomp-and-ceremony of Festival Polinaise to the charming folkloricism of Ifgol gjett e gjeitin (When I Was Tending The Mountain Goats).

Piazzolla Tango Distinto
Music for Solo Trombone and Instrumental Ensemble Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone), instrumental ensemble NAXOS | 8572596 | 747313259670 | CD
Legendary tango performer and composer Astor Piazzolla gained experience of jazz in New York and classical form and technique through studies with Alberto Ginastera. His work lends itself perfectly to arrangement for all kinds of ensemble, and this is the first recording with solo trombone. These popular pieces showcase the stunning playing of multi-award winning soloist Achilles Liarmakopoulos in a variety of moods, including the famous Oblivion, and Le Grand Tango, a virtuoso show-stopper originally written for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
'I haven't sat right through a CD of tangos until this one. Greek trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos, who plays with Canadian Brass, is an astonishing player, a musician of extraordinary subtlety and understatement. With the sweetest, most seductive tone imaginable, he glides through the Piazzolla classics, including the full Histoire du Tango, all three movements of the beautiful Serie del Angel, Michelangelo, Oblivion and a heart-wrenching, soulful rendition of Soledad. His group, including the great bandoneon player Hector del Curto, is superlative. An outstanding disc.' (Herald Scotland)
Johann Strauss I Edition Vol 20 Slovak Sinfonietta Zilina, Christian Pollack (conductor) MARCO POLO | 8225340 | CD | 636943534021
Johann Strauss the Elder’s compositions of the mid-1840s are among his very finest. As ever they are saturated with his seemingly inexhaustible vitality and invention, qualities admired by dancers and critics alike. The Austrian Celebration March was written, in dashing military fashion, for the unveiling of a monument to Emperor Franz I. In Bohemian Girl Quadrille, Strauss uses themes from the Irish composer Michael William Balfe’s then wildly popular opera The Bohemian Girl to such dizzying effect that it was encored three times. Sounds of the Vltava, written following the devastating flood in the spring of 1845, was a gift to the citizens of Prague.
Still Symphonies Nos 2 and 3, Wood Notes Fort Smith Symphony, John Jeter (conductor) NAXOS | 8559676 | CD | 636943967621
The life and career of the African-American composer William Grant Still qualifies as the quintessential American ‘success story.’ Often referred to as the ‘dean of African-American composers,’ Still rose from humble beginnings to work as an arranger while studying composition with Chadwick and Varèse. Still embraced the blues, spirituals, jazz, and other ethnic American musics within classical forms. Wood Notes musically depicts Still’s love of nature. Symphony No. 2, the last of a trilogy of works depicting the African-American experience, presents the vision of an integrated American society, while Symphony No. 3 describes a spiritual ‘day in the life’ of a devout worshipper. This disc completes the Naxos cycle of William Grant Still’s Symphonies.
Rimsky-Korsakov Orchestral Suites
Snow Maiden, Sadko, Mlada Suites from Le Coq D'or Seattle Symphony, Gerard Schwarz (conductor) NAXOS | 8572787 | CD | 747313278770
Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral genius shines through in his colourful operatic suites, and that from his final opera Le Coq d’or is richly dramatic and expressive. The complicated folk-based story of the Snow Maiden is simplified into four enchanting movements, and that of Sadko into a single, radiantly descriptive tone-poem. The thrilling legend of Mlada is represented by vivid dances and a final Cortège. Gerard Schwarz’s recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade (8572693) with the Seattle Symphony was described as ‘absolutely terrific’ (ClassicsToday.com).
Hill String Quartets Vol 4
String Quartets Nos 10 and 11, Life Dominion String Quartet, Richard Mapp (piano) NAXOS | 8572844 | CD | 747313284474
Alfred Hill was the doyen of Australasian composers, and his exploration of the string quartet demonstrates the range of his imagination. Both the Tenth and Eleventh quartets were written in 1935, but they offer richly differing affiliations. No. 10 brings a classical formality fused with hints of Gershwin, and a remarkable last movement which recalls the three earlier movements in rapid succession in just 32 bars, whereas No. 11 marks the height of Hill’s impressionist refinement, complete with a characteristically beautiful slow movement. The ‘Life’ Quintet, with its vocal finale, was written in 1912, a fascinating experiment later reworked into a symphony.
