Angela Hewitt's new version of the keyboard ‘Old Testament’, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, comes 10 years after her marvelous first recording. It also comes just after a ‘world tour’, playing the work in 58 cities, and shows her developing views as an interpreter. The first version was highly pianistic, using tonal colour and shape, but also remarkably pure. Now she thinks it was too straight, and the new set is artistically freer and more expressive, with considerable flexibility in rhythm. It will be too much for purists. Yet the serious collector will want both for the fascinating comparisons they afford.
Key track: The simple but lovely C major prelude shows where Hewitt's approach is going.
