Leon Berben (organ)
Juan Bautista Jose Cabanilles (1644-1712) was principal organist at Valencia Cathedral, Spain. The last of the Spanish mystic organists, his works harbour early characteristics of the new musical form: the Sonata. Cabanilles was certainly the greatest of the Valencian composers of organ music, and together with Correa de Araujo one of the most important Spanish organists of the 17th century. Leon Berben (b.1970) studied harpsichord and organ with Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt, and since 2000 has been the harpsichordist with Musica Antiqua Koln. His recordings on historic organs and harpsichords - above all for the labels Aeolus and Ramee - are highly acclaimed in the press and have received numerous awards.

Le Grazie Veneziane Music from the Ospedali
Porpora De Profundis, Hasse Laudate Pueri, Galuppi Dixit Dominus
Maria Grazia Schiavo (soprano), Emanuela Galli (soprano), Jose Maria Lo Monaco (alto), Vocal Concert Dresden, Dresdener Instrumental-Consort, Peter Kopp (conductor)
Over the course of their existence, the Ospedali in Venice developed from being purely charitable orphanages into renowned centres of Venetian musical culture. Far beyond the borders of Venice, concerts given by young ladies trained at the Ospedali became celebrated events during the 18th century. Sacred music written specifically for female singers and instrumentalists, and performed by women in the churches, existed only in Venice at that time. This unique musical tradition became widely famous through the works of Vivaldi, Hasse, Porpora and Galuppi, who were active as teachers at the four 'Ospedali grandi'. Under the direction of Peter Kopp, soloists Maria Grazia Schiavo, Emanuela Galli, Jose Maria Lo Monaco, and women of the Vocal Concert Dresden recreate what was described as the ‘heavenly singing’ at the Venetian Ospedali.

Handel Nine German Arias
Mattheson Three German Arias
Monika Mauch (soprano), L'arpa Festante, Rien Voskulien (director)
Praise for the beauty of nature and eternal life is the subject of the sacred poems by B.H. Brockes which Handel set to music in his Nine German Arias. In these pieces for soprano and chamber orchestra, Handel drew in many places on music from his own exquisite operas, with the voice part in the German arias adapted to be less virtuosic but more deeply expressive. The Three German Arias by Johann Mattheson (1681-1764), which have their premiere recording on this disc, were formerly attributed to Handel. Soprano Monika Mauch is accompanied in her beautiful interpretation by the period-instrument ensemble L'arpa festante.

Renate Linortner (flute), Joji Hattori (violin), Johannes Flieder (viola), Bernhard Naoki Hedenborg (cello)
The wind quartet has always remained in the shadow of the string quartet, as the latter developed in the second half of the 18th century into one of the most important chamber music genres. Flute quartets, however, were already being written by Johann Joachim Quantz, J.C. Bach and others while the string quartet was still in its infancy. Mozart composed four flute quartets, of which the Quartet in D Major KV285 is the best known for its light, elegant charm. Beethoven's Serenade for flute, violin and viola is a similarly captivating work.
