Putumayo's vibrant new album South Africa celebrates the rich musical diversity of this unique country at the southern tip of Africa. With the soccer World Cup taking place for the first time on African soil from June 11 to July 11, international attention will be focused on South Africa and its post-apartheid status as a democracy and economic powerhouse.

Over the course of its history, this 'rainbow nation' with 11 official languages has nurtured many musical styles, including mbaqanga, kwela and township jive, among others. While South Africans have endured many struggles, they have often used music as a tool to protest and to express their hopes for a better future. Putumayo’s South Africa CD is a fusion of the traditional and contemporary, with legends like the late singer and political activist Miriam Makeba, the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir and mbaqanga pioneers Soul Brothers.

The singer, guitarist, composer and percussionist Vinicius Cantuaria is a legend in Bossa Nova and jazz circles. He was born in Manaus (Amazon) and grew up in Rio, relocating to New York in the mid-1990s. Cantuaria has been very successful as a songwriter/composer, with ‘Lua e Estrela’ being recorded by Caetano Veloso in 1981. As a performer he has played with Veloso, Chico Buarque and other luminaries on the Brazilian scene. He has branched out over the past few years into a solo career as a guitarist and singer both on record and one stage, where he appears with star New York Musicians.

Vinicius owns his studio in New York, where he recorded Samba Carioca with special guests including jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and guitarist Bill Frisell.

These ancient Iraqi rhythms based on Arabian maqams conjur images of bazaars and mosques in Baghdad and beyond. The instruments played include oud (short-necked lute), dombak (single-headed goblet drum), riqq (tambourine), khishba (wooden hour-glass drum) and duff or tar (tambourines).  Music played on the Middle Eastern lute, the oud, has become especially popular in Australia through Joseph Tawadros and international groups like Trio Joubran and Les Triaboliques.

Orchestre National de Barbès, also known as ONB, is a Moroccan band formed in 1995 by Youcef Boukella, composer and bass player. The group embraces a multicultural philosophy, practising a blend of rock and trad', gnawa, raï, salsa, chââbi, reggae, alaoui and jazz. Orchestre National de Barbès is above all a stage-band which draws inspiration from stars of Oranese raï, Algerian chaâbi and from classical Gnawas; distilled through rock orchestration and some colourful Jamaican touches.

Glenn Miller’s reign as the one of the most popular bandleaders in the world came relatively late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he utterly dominated popular music, and over time he has proven the most enduring figure of the swing era, with reissues of his recordings achieving gold record status 40 years after his death.

This 3-CD set comprises 48 tracks including 'Georgia On My Mind' and 'In A Sentimental Mood', all original recordings digitally re-mastered.

Cornettist Leon Bismark ('Bix') Beiderbecke (1903-1931) was a classic jazz innovator of iconic status. His tragically early death at only 28, after a mere six years’ recording career, has led to much romanticallyassembled myth and legend as the archetypal troubled creator whose gifts are terminated too soon by life’s cruelties. But it was of course his music that came first. As this collection illustrates, that is where the story really starts and ends; a story of innovation which places him at the central birthplace of jazz as we define it today. Young Man With A Horn presents the finest 52 tracks from the Bix discography. That immortal recorded definition of Beiderbecke’s genius, "Singin’ The Blues", opens a definitive cherry-picked panorama of his career. There are 16 tracks with Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra (1927/9), all long regarded as the living definition of Dixieland jazz at its greatest (I’m Coming, Virginia / Riverboat Shuffle) alongside Beiderbecke’s own 'Gang' – 12 numbers including 'Jazz Me Blues' and 'At The Jazz Band Ball'. There are seven highlights too from his time with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in 1927/8 (Louisiana / Changes), all shining trophies of the jazz age.

The second half of the 20th century would not have been as funny without the Goons, widely regarded as 'bigger than The Beatles'. The massive influence this group had on comedy is not to be underestimated. Without the Goons, there would have been no Monty Python’s Flying Circus, no Goodies, no Fawlty Towers or no National Lampoon.

The show was originally produced and broadcast by the BBC Home Service from 1951 to 1960 and was mainly written by Spike Milligan. This release combines two classic Goon shows, digitally re-mastered, on one disc.

Peter Gunn was an American private eye television series which aired on the NBC and later ABC television networks from 1958 to 1961. The show’s creator (and also writer and director on occasion) was Blake Edwards. A total of 114 thirty-minute episodes were produced. The series is remembered mostly for its music, especially 'The Peter Gunn

Theme', which won an Emmy and two Grammys for Henry Mancini and has become a jazz-rock standard. 24 tracks, digitally re-mastered.
