Zumra - Reimagined Bosnian Folksongs
Amira (vocals), Merima Kljuco (accordion)
WORLD VILLAGE |

CD |

Fans of Zulya will find much to admire in the music of Amira, 'Bosnia's Billie Holiday'. Born in Sarajevo at a time when the folk music of Yugoslavia enjoyed widespread popularity, Amira learned traditional sevdalinke (songs of yearning) from her mother. Her big break came performing with the gypsy ensemble Mostar Sevdah Reunion, her 2005 debut solo album finding its way onto several ‘Album of the Year’ lists. Accompanied by Merima Ključo, one of the world's finest classical accordionists, Amira looks at these traditional songs under a new light, rediscovering them and presenting them as the true gems they are. These are hauntingly beautiful examples of the highly complex musical cultures of Bosnia, Serbia and Macedonia. 'Where Amira goes, follow...Zumra is in the ballpark for one of this year's best.' -Froots

This spirited album of classical music with a fierce gypsy twist is the debut offering from Romanian-born rising star Sarah Nemtanu, first violin and soloist with the Orchestre National de France and the violinist in the French film Le Concert. Produced by Armand Amar (Songs from a World Apart), Gypsic irreverently blends classical precision with Balkan fire, notably in its cimbalom accompaniment and in a jazz and world music-tinged rendition of Ravel’s Violin Sonata Blues. The result is a surprising and fresh concoction; a must for fans of Pavel Šporcl's Gypsy Way (SU3951).

Satie undoubtedly would have approved of these exotic touches gracing his gnossiennes and gymnopedies.

Here is a refreshing new take on the jazz repertory of the 1930s. After his albums Fats Domino's True Spirit and Doo-wop Mattheiu Borré offers a little jewel full of sensitivity and emotion, a blend of standards and original compositions. In this opus, he reaches back into the songs from the American musicals which marked his childhood and the music of Georges Gershwin which he discovered at the end of his classical piano studies. In terms of musical color, Mattheiu Boré's primary source of inspriation is the intimate and nonchalant universe of Hoogy Carmichael emphasizing the essential: 'a melody and lyrics'.

HATOLOGY |
HATOLOGY686 |
CD |

The art of O'Rourke and Connors lies in letting one feel the immobility within movement. It's almost superfluous to say that this music belongs to the realm of dreams; it's music for the mind, abstract and yet wholly present. The two guitarists set off in search of sound. Their quest is wilde-raging and deeply contemplative. The music is almost oriental in its sparseness yet eternally rooted in the American landscape, inviting the following thought: if John Cage had ever composed any country music, it would certainly have sounded like this...

Playing ballads is, in may ways, the ultimate musical challenge. A ballad is like a window into the soul of the artist. From the first note, it must be approached with true and honest feeling, and a sense of openness. We hope that in opening our hearts, we have touched yours.' -Marc Coplan

Cliff Richard, OBE (born Harry Webb) along with his his backing group The Drifters (later to become The Shadows) was the British answer to Elvis as the rebellious rock 'n' roll singer in the Presley style. He dominated the British popular music scene in the pre-Beatles period of the late 1950s and early 1960s. His 1958 hit single 'Move It' is often described as Britain’s first authentic rock and roll song, and John Lennon once claimed that 'before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music'. Cliff Richard celebrated his 70th birthday this year and toured Australia in February. These 20 tracks are digitally re-mastered and include the hits 'Living Doll' and 'Schoolboy Crush'.

Chuck Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986, with the comment that he 'laid the groundwork for not only a rock and roll sound but a rock and roll stance'. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Chuck Berry number 5 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, being the 3rd solo singer behind Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. He was also ranked 6th on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. In November 2008, the magazine ranked Berry at number 41 in their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included three of Chuck Berry’s songs ('Johnny B. Goode', 'Maybellene', 'Rock and Roll Music'), of the 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll, all included on this 2-CD set along with 'Roll Over Beethoven' and other original hits totalling 42 tracks.

Ray Charles is the musician credited with developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also pioneered the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging ‘50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavour from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the ‘60s) country. Then there was his singing: his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th-century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. With his greatest hits including 'What'd I Say', 'Mess Around' and 'Night Time is the Right Time', this 24-track collection is digitally re-mastered and comes in a high-quality slipcase.

Ray Conniff was the man who popularised wordless vocal choruses and light orchestral accompaniment on a mix of popular standards and contemporary hits of the 1950s and 60s. He was a trombone player for Bunny Berigan’s Orchestra and Bob Crosby’s Bobcats before being hired as an arranger by Mitch Miller in 1954. After he wrote the charts for several sizeable Columbia hits during the mid-’50s, Conniff became a solo artist as well, applying his arranging techniques to instrumental easy listening for the booming adult album market. The result, 12 Top Ten LPs and well over 50 million total albums sold, cemented his status as one of the top LP sellers of all time. This collection comprises two original albums on one CD (Hollywood in Rhythm and Broadway in Rhythm), 24 tracks digitally re-mastered and packaged in a high-quality slipcase.
