5 STAR REVIEW IN BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE! The sultry, sensuous atmosphere of Anima Eterna's performance of Bolero puts the lie to Ravel's quip that it was 'a piece for orchestra, without music'. On this outstanding disc Ravel's shimmering orchestration builds to a climax challenged, perhaps, only by his tribute to Vienna, La Valse. The 'left-hand' concerto sounds as never before when played on a 1905 Erard piano, more so as the orchestral winds and strings respect the norms of Ravel's own time (as distant to us today as was Mozart from Tchaikovsky!) both in terms of their construction and performance technique. This is an astonishing disc by any standards.

Gerald Finzi came to attention with works like the song-cycle to Thomas Hardy poems, By Footpath and Stile (1921-2). His reputation grew during the 1930s with another group of Hardy settings, Earth and Air and Rain (1928-32). To a Poet is a posthumous collection bringing together six songs for baritone by various poets. Pianist Iain Burnside recently toured Australia for recitals with Yvonne Kenny.

Simone Lamsma has won numerous national and international awards and scholarships, most notably the 1st prize in the China International Violin Competition 2005, the 1st Prize in the Benjamin Britten International Violin Competition 2004 and the 1st Prize in the National Dutch Violin Competition 2003. She plays the unique 'Habeneck' Stradivarius of 1734.

Beate Altenburg prepared these almost forgotten treasures the from original manuscripts.

The works featured on this recording date from the 1830s, when Strauss was pre-eminent in the ballrooms of Biedermeier Vienna. Among many delightful highlights are the brightly optimistic Tribute Waltz to the newly crowned Emperor Ferdinand I, the exotically coloured Indian Galop, inspired by a visiting troupe of Indian dancers, the hugely popular Furioso Galop on motifs from Liszt, and the bacchanalian Wings of Mercury Waltz whose popularity quickly spread beyond the Austrian borders.
