ORCHESTRAL BROADWAY SELECTIONS The Broadway musical has a tradition traceable to the New York premiere of John Gay’s Beggar’s Opera in 1751. During the 20th century more than 2,000 productions were staged on Broadway, although only a few were blockbusters. Kiss Me, Kate (1948) and Funny Girl (1964) were two megamusicals included here alongside several others less famous, but which nonetheless qualify as Broadway classics and, being now half a century or more old, have earned the tag ‘vintage’.

Rodrigo’s symphonic poem Dulcinea’s Absence is both heroic and romantic. The most recent work on this disc, a miniature suite from Jorge Fernandez Guerra’s soundtrack, Tres momentos de Don Quichotte, for Pabst’s 1933 silent movie, has been desribed by the composer as 'idealised cinematographic music…of great lyricism'.

This is a glorious late romantic work in an idiom akin to Rachmaninov; indeed there are passages which seem to quote the Russian's fourth concerto - except that Alnaes was written first! The Sinding Concerto is a three-movement work based on one theme which undergoes many Lisztian transformations.
