ANTHEMS FOR THE CHAPEL ROYAL
Chapel Royal Choir, Musicians Extra-ordinary, Andrew Gant (conductor)
- Five fantastic Anthems by the composer of the ever-popular Messiah
- Features soloists and the Choir of the Chapel Royal
- Recorded in the Chapel Royal itself – a first for Naxos!
|
|
HANDEL RARITIES RESTORED This recording restores some of Handel’s finest but least-known music to the choir for which he wrote it and to the building where he performed it, the English Chapel Royal, a group of professional singers in a different tradition from the opera stars with whom he worked in the theatre. Forming one of the most impressive areas of Baroque music, Handel’s English church music spans his entire active career in London, from his first anthem composed soon after his arrival, to his last works nearly forty years later.

ORCHESTRAL BROADWAY SELECTIONS The Broadway musical has a tradition traceable to the New York premiere of John Gay’s Beggar’s Opera in 1751. During the 20th century more than 2,000 productions were staged on Broadway, although only a few were blockbusters. Kiss Me, Kate (1948) and Funny Girl (1964) were two megamusicals included here alongside several others less famous, but which nonetheless qualify as Broadway classics and, being now half a century or more old, have earned the tag ‘vintage’.

- Fascinating annotations by the composer explain his insiprations
- Deeply-felt and highly emotional music
- The 8th Quartet is dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 80th birthday
|
|
THE 'NAXOS' QUARTETS CONTINUE Peter Maxwell Davies is one of the foremost composers of our time, and is currently Master of the Queen’s Music. Plainchant, musical tradition and the haunting landscape of his adopted Orkney Islands all serve as inspiration to Maxwell Davies’ extraordinary imagination. This is the fourth release in a series of ten quartets commissioned by Naxos. Naxos Quartet No. 7 is a tribute to the Baroque architect Francesco Borromini. Its intense and brooding seven movements are contrasted by the bright and airy single-movement Quartet No. 8, based on John Dowland’s Queen Elizabeth’s Galliard, and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her eightieth birthday.

CHERUBINI
SYMPHONY IN D MAJOR & OPERA OVERTURES
Sanremo Symphony Orchestra, Piero Bellugi (conductor)
- Revived interest in the cosmopolitan music of Luigi Cherubini
- The Sanremo Symphony is one of only twelve orchestras recognised by the Italian nation
- Conductor Piero Bellugi has perforned around the world to great acclaim
|
|
REDISCOVER BEETHOVEN'S FAVOURITE COMPOSER Cherubini, best remembered today for his Requiem (Naxos 8554749) and opera Medea, was held in the highest regard by his contemporaries, including Beethoven who considered him to be the greatest living composer of all. With its echoes of Schubert and Rossini, and a brilliant closing movement, Cherubini’s only Symphony is a highly inventive and beautifully proportioned work. The three opera overtures (to Medea, Faniska & Lodoiska) are dramatic works filled with suspense and intervening passages of tender lyricism.

DON QUIXOTE IN SPANISH MUSIC
MUSIC BY RODRIGO, ROMAN, BARBIERI, GUERRA & GOMBAU
Celia Alcedo, Victor Arriola, Fernando Cobo, Jose Antonio Lopez, Victoria Marchante, Lilian Moriani, Maria Jose Suarez, Madrid Community Chorus & Orchestra, Jose Ramon Encinar (conductor)
- Celebration of a great Spanish character
- Includes music recorded for the very first time
- Informative annotations by the composers
|
|
DON QUIXOTE RIDES AGAIN These five works were all inspired by Cervantes’ masterpiece Don Quijote de la Mancha. Barbieri’s incidental music was composed as part of the first official commemoration, in 1861, of the anniversary of Cervantes’ death. Rodrigo’s symphonic poem Dulcinea’s Absence is both heroic and romantic. The most recent work on this disc, a miniature suite from Jorge Fernandez Guerra’s soundtrack, Tres momentos de Don Quichotte, for Pabst’s 1933 silent movie, has been desribed by the composer as 'idealised cinematographic music…of great lyricism'.

|
|
GUSTAVE HOLST THE TEACHER English composer Gustav Holst served for many years as director of music at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London, and it was for the pupils there that he wrote his St Paul’s Suite, his most famous work for amateurs and, shortly after, his Brook Green Suite, with its prevailing suggestion of English folk-song. The infrequently performed Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra begins with a ‘fugal’ scherzo, followed by a very beautiful duet for the two soloists.

- Piers Lane tours Australian during April-May 2007
- Hyperion Record of the Month
- Latest volume in a revelatory series reviving great works from the Romantic repertoire
|
|
ROMANTIC PIANO CONCERTO VOL 42 While Sinding is at least a name to most people (if only for 'The Rustle of Spring'), Alnae is almost completely unknown outside his native land, yet it is perhaps this latter's concerto which makes the bigger impression. This is a glorious late romantic work in an idiom akin to Rachmaninov; indeed there are passages which seem to quote the Russian's fourth concerto - except that Alnaes was written first! The Sinding Concerto is a three-movement work based on one theme which undergoes many Lisztian transformations.

MARTINU
PIANO QUINTETS 1 & 2, SONATA FOR TWO VIOLINS & PIANO
Karel Kosarek (piano), Martinu Quartet
|
|
MASTERPIECES BY MUCH-TRAVELLED MARTINU Chamber music occupies a significant place in Bohuslav Martinu's output. His 1st Piano Quintet of 1933, a period during which Martinu renewed his interest in the folk-lore and traditional music of his native Bohemia, is a fine instance of neo-classicism. The larger-scale 2nd Piano Quintet of 1944, exhibits the restlessness and anxiety that Martinu felt during the war years. The Sonata for Two Violins and Piano is written in a style more Baroque than Classical.

FIRST RECORDINGS OF KOECHLIN SONGS Less well known than his older contemporary Dubussy, Charles Koechlin nonetheless wrote music of gentle and ethereal beauty as the 20 Breton Songs on this disc show. Inspired by folk poetry, their brevity and restraint complement his Cello Sonata, written only two years after that of Debussy.

HAYDN SYMPHONIES VOL 7 'For my musicians and me, the playing of Haydn’s symphonies is both an extremely interesting task and a major challenge. However, this ambitious project offers a unique chance to experience at first hand the development of the classic symphony. I am very happy to have found, in Haenssler Classic, a partner for ”our Haydn”.' (Thomas Fey)

MENDELSSOHN
SYMPHONY NO 1, STRING SYMPHONIES NOS 8 & 13
Heidelberg Symphony, Thomas Fey (conductor)

|
HEAR MENDELSSOHN ANEW The String Symphony no 8, here heard in Mendelssohn's own alternative orchestration (with winds), receives a brilliant performance under Thomas Fey, a conductor who knows and loves Mendelssohn's music deeply. This is the first volume of a series that looks to set a new standard for recordings of symphonies by the early Romantic master.
