BIS | BISCD1799 | CD | 7318590017999

The Siduri Dances, Bernstein Halil, Rouse Flute Concerto

Yet again giving proof of her great versatility, Sharon Bezaly's latest release consists of four concertante works, composed between 1980 and 2007. Each work has been recorded with a different orchestra and conductor, the common denominator being the soloist and the golden sound of her 24 carat flute. The highlight of the disc: Australian composer Brett Dean's lively Siduri Dances, composed specially for Bezaly. This CD brings together various Bezaly performances featured on previous BIS releases and is a testament to her varied reportoire ouevre and masterful craft on the flute.

CHAN0767

Handel Duets
Sarah Connolly (mezzo), Rosemary Joshua (soprano), English Concert, Harry Bicket (conductor)
CHANDOS | CHAN0767 | CD | 095115076729

Duets for soprano and mezzo-soprano from Agrippina, Belshazzar, Sosarme, Ottone, Tamerlano, Ariodante, Radimisto, Theodora, Giulio Cesare

This new Handel collection features two great singers - Sarah Connolly (mezzo) and Rosemary Joshua (soprano) - alongside the English Concert, one of the finest baroque orchestras in the UK. Duets play a key role in Handel’s stage works. A master of the Baroque opera seria medium, with its extended sequence of solo arias and recitative dialogue, he understood the dramatic effectiveness of occasional numbers blending two voices, generally those of a soprano heroine and a castrato hero.

Sarah Connolly's Handelian roles have including the title-role in Giulio Cesare for the Glyndebourne Festival and in Agrippina, Xerxes, Ariodante and Ruggiero (Alcina) for the English National Opera. Rosemary Joshua, too, is well known for her Handel, having sung the title-role in Semele for which she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award and recorded for Chandos. A must-have for all Handel enthusiasts.

CHAN10586

Haydn Piano Sonatas Vol 1
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)
CHANDOS | CHAN10586 | CD | 095115158623

Sonatas in A Flat Major No 31, D Major No 391, B Minor No 47, C Minor No 49

Following his Gramophone Award-winning Debussy cycle, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet now embarks on the Haydn Piano Sonatas, and confirms that he should in no way be pigeon-holed in French repertoire. Few leading pianists have recorded these virtuosic Classical sonatas but Bavouzet felt he had something new to contribute. He plays a Yamaha grand, imported from France and beautifully suited to the timbre he wanted to achieve. The programme for Volume 1 contains the experimental and ambitious Sonata in A flat major No.31, the elegantly virtuosic Sonata in D major No.39l, the expressive Sonata in B minor No.47 and the almost Schubertian Sonata in C sharp minor No.49.

HMC902051

Wolkenstein Songs of Myself
Andreas Scholl (countertenor) Schield of Harmonies, Crawford Young (conductor)
HARMONIA MUNDI | HMC902051 | CD | 794881941025

Few composers can have boasted quite such a colourful existence as the medieval poet and sometime diplomat Oswald von Wolkenstein. Having grown up in a Tyrolean castle, in a world recently ripped apart by the Black Death epidemic and immersed in religious and territorial conflict, Wolkenstein became something of a wandering knight with a complicated private life. If his travels greatly embellished the subject matter of his works they also enriched the musical form, as he incorporated French songs into the German style. A singer of warm humanity, Andreas Scholl's creamy and communicative countertenor voice has greatly endeared him to critics and public alike. This programme, the result of new research into von Wolkenstein, features previously unrecorded songs and instrumental arrangements and a rare glimpse of Scholl singing in his baritone voice as well as in his much-admired countertenor range.

Martin Golgotha
Judith Gaulthier (soprano), Marianne Beate Kielland (alto), Adrian Thomson (tenor), Mattijs van de Woerd (baritone), Konstantin Wolff (bass), Cappella Amsterdam, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Reus (conductor)
HARMONIA MUNDI | HMC90205657 | CD2 | 794881942923

Rembrandt’s engraving The Three Crosses (1653) inspired Frank Martin to compose his great oratorio, Golgotha. Ten musical tableaux relate the story of Christ’s Passion from the entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection. Martin draws on all four Gospels, interspersed with excerpts from the Meditations and Confessions of Augustine of Hippo, and individual verses from the Psalms and liturgy for Holy Saturday. The final part of the work became an epilogue, anticipating the events of Easter Day, replacing mourning with hope. Here Martin seems to have captured that ‘strange white light’ of transfiguration which he had so admired in Rembrandt’s etching: the paradox of a luminous darkness. Daniel Reuss founded Cappella Amsterdam in 1990, and recorded with the RIAS Kammerchor the breathtaking Mass by Frank Martin, a disc that was awarded 10/10 on ClassicsToday.com.

Beethoven Cello Sonatas Vol 2
Daniel Muller-Schott (cello) Angela Hewitt (piano)
HYPERION | CDA67755 | CD | 034571177557

Variations in G major on See the Conquering hero comes from Handel's Judas Maccbeus Wo045, Cello Sonata in C major Op 102 No 1, Variations in F major on Ein Madchen oder Weibchen from Mozart's The Magic Flute Op 66

The mercurial partnership of Angela Hewitt and Daniel Muller Schott brought 'overwhelming intensity and emotional gravitas’ to a first disc of Beethoven’s cello sonatas (CDA67633). Here in a second volume they present two more of these groundbreaking masterpieces, together with the composer’s homages to Mozart and Handel—works which are equally important additions to the cello repertoire.

CDA67805

Dvorak Piano Quintets
Piers Lane (piano), Goldner String Quartet
HYPERION | CDA67805 | CD | 034571178059

Piano Quartet No 1 in A major Op 5, Piano Quintet No 2 in A major Op 81

The performing team of Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet has won many plaudits for their enlightening interpretations of the obscurer piano quintet repertoire: Bloch (CDA67638) and Bridge (CDA67726). Now they turn to a composer who triumphed in the genre. Dvorak’s two piano quintets were written at different stages of the composer’s career: the first during a period of poverty and uncertainty, the second when the composer was approaching the zenith of his international fame. Performances of technical polish and expressive power, sensitively recorded, make this a chamber disc to treasure!

V5229

Impressions on Chopin
Lesdek Mozdzer (piano)
NAIVE | V5229 | CD | 822186052297

To celebrate the bicentennial of Frederic Chopin's birth, Naive has re-issued Impressions on Chopin - a fascinating, charming and refreshing album that sees the internationally acclaimed Polish jazz pianist Leszek Mozdzer perform his own arrangements of well known works by Chopin.

In Mozdzer’s world of music without nationality, the Polish mazurka works alongside ragtime, flamenco and Cuban calypso and the typically Chopin rubato is occasionally replaced by a swing pulse. The original harmony also becomes a field for experimentation, and with the piano significantly ’prepared’ the sound of the music is entirely different, indeed at times light years from the Chopin of tradition. For fans of Chopin, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock!
