GLASS
HEROES SYMPHONY & THE LIGHT
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop (conductor)
- Philip Glass's music appeals both to fans of classical and popular music
- Heroes Symphony repeats the success of his Low Symphony (1993), which was based on the classic David Bowie/Brian Eno rock album, Low
- Uses the songs Heroes, Abdulmajid, Sense of Doubt, Sons of the Silent Age, Neukoln & V2 Schneider
- World –renowned performers guarantee a great performance
|
|
POPULAR CONTEMPORARY SYMPHONIC MUSIC Orchestral music has been at the forefront of Philip Glass’ activities for much of the last two decades. The six movements of Heroes Symphony, a reworking of David Bowie and Brian Eno’s classic rock album, function as independent pieces that between them build into a self-sufficient musical work. The Light has its inspiration in a very different source: the Michelson-Morley experiment confirming the uniform speed of light.

THOMSON
THE PLOW THAT BROKE THE PLAINS & THE RIVER
Post-Classical Ensemble
- The original films by Pare Lorentz with newly-recorded soundtracks of the classic scores by Virgil Thomson
- Includes some tracks originally omitted from the films
- These landmark American documentary films broke new ground in seamlessly marrying pictorial imagery, symphonic music, and poetic free verse with supreme artistry.
- They indelibly encapsulate the strivings of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'New Deal'
|
|
ACCLAIMED SOUNDTRACKS TO CLASSIC FILMS Virgil Thomson's scores for both films are among the most famous ever composed for the movies. Aaron Copland praised the music for The Plow for its 'frankness and openness of feeling', calling it 'fresher, more simple, and more personal' than the Hollywood norm. He called the music for The River 'a lesson in how to treat Americana'.

FALLA
PIANO MUSIC VOL 1
Daniel Ligorio Ferrandiz (piano)
- Volume 1 of the first recording of Falla's complete piano music
- Includes the famous Suite from Love The Magician
- Youthful Spanish flair from both the music and the performer, the critically acclaimed pianist Daniel Ligorio Ferrandiz
|
|
THE FRESH YOUNG SPIRIT OF SPAIN Manuel da Falla's early compositions included here, Nocturne, Serenata and Serenata andaluza, are clearly the work of an exceptional student, although they are written very much in a Romantic vein which Falla would later develop into the overt nationalism that marks his mature work. For the Suite from El amor brujo (Love the Magician), Daniel Ligorio Ferrandiz has edited the composer's sketches and unfinished transcription in order to achieve an effect closer to the orchestral version.

The Soldier’s Tale is based on a Russian folk-tale of the man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a violin. Stravinsky’s comic masterpiece, Renard, also based on a Russian folk-tale, is heard here in an amended version of his own English translation. Also features Scherzo à la Russe, Three Japanese Lyrics and The Song of the Volga Boatman.

INSPIRING CLASSICAL SYMPHONIES In his lifetime Wenzel Pichl (1741-1805) was esteemed as one of the foremost European composers of the age. A friend of Dittersdorf, whose works exerted a strong influence on his development, Pichl wrote symphonies that rank among the most interesting of the period. The symphonies featured on this recording, all of which were composed in the 1760s and take as their subject mythical figures from classical antiquity, reveal a composer of flair and technical resourcefulness.

- New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s critically-acclaimed Naxos recordings have sold more than half-a-million copies and achieved critical acclaim, including Gramophone Editor’s Choice

HEROIC, REVOLUTIONARY ORCHESTRAL WORKS In his 13 symphonic poems Liszt created compositions of contrasting moods and powerful musical ideas. This recording includes Hungaria, a patriotic reflection on the Hungarian uprising of 1848, and the sombre Héroïde funèbre, described by Liszt as casting a ‘transfiguring veil over the tomb of the brave’. Le Triomphe funèbre du Tasse is an epilogue to Liszt’s earlier symphonic poem on the tragic fate of the 16th-century Italian poet, Torquato Tasso. Volumes 1-3 of Liszt's Symphonic Poems also available on 8550487, 8553355 and 8557846.

THREE GREAT COLE PORTER MUSICALS Porter's love of travel made its way into his work. This collection is devoted to musicals written between 1943 & 1953 and covers three of his favourite locations – France (Can-Can), Latin America (Mexican Hayride) and the Caribbean (The Pirate). In each piece he manages to give a real flavour of the place you're visiting, while remaining quintessentially Cole Porter – with witty, wry lyrics and plangently haunting melodies.

SAINT-SAENS
CELLO SONATAS NOS 1 & 2
Maria Kliegel (cello), Francois-Joel Thiollier (piano)
|
|
Unlike his two Cello Concertos, performed by Maria Kliegel on Naxos 8553039, Saint-Saens’ Cello Sonatas are underrated works. The turbulent Sonata No 1, which makes full use of the lower registers of both cello and piano, reflects the composer’s sadness at the loss of a great-aunt and at the state of France following Napoleon III’s crushing defeat by Prussia at Sedan in 1870. Written more than 30 years later, Sonata No 2 is a more ambitious and original work. ‘The Adagio will bring tears to your eyes,’ Saint-Saens wrote to his publisher, Durand, while the last movement, propelled forward in the manner of a toccata, ‘...will wake anyone who’s slept through the rest of the piece’.

CLARKE
VIOLA MUSIC
Philip Dukes (viola), Daniel Hope (violin), Robert Plane (clarinet), Sophia Rahman (piano)
|
|
Rebecca Clarke’s music is often described (along with that of Vaughan Williams) as English impressionism, but her style ranges from lush post-romantic (as in the passionate Viola Sonata, her best-known work) to the taut neo-classicism of Stravinsky (as heard in her Prelude, Allegro, and Pastorale). Clarke trained with Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, but wrote much of her music while living in the United States. Most of her music remained unpublished in her lifetime, and this recording is part of a dramatic discovery that has been taking place since her 90th birthday in 1976.

Markus Eiche, Thomas Randle, Claire Rutter, Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus, Highcliffe Junior Choir, Bournemouth Symphony Chorus & Orchestra, Marin Alsop (conductor)
|
|
With its mixture of funny, bawdy and hedonistic texts taken from the Middle Ages, Carl Orff created in Carmina Burana a choral work of powerful pagan sensuality and direct physical excitement. The pulsating rhythms, colourful orchestration and dynamic choruses, contrasted with moments of sensuous innocence, have taken Carmina Burana into the world of ‘pop classics’. The work has also provided the backdrop for countless international television adverts, and for the films Excalibur, Natural Born Killers and Badlands.

ITALIAN INTERMEZZI
Kathleen Van de Graaff (soprano), Peter Van de Graaff (bass-baritone), Comic Intermezzo Orchestra
|
|
The 18th century Italian comic intermezzo, originally inserted between the acts of serious operas, won enormous contemporary popularity. The present release includes an example of the form from the now largely neglected Neapolitan composer Domenico Sarri in which lovers quarrel and are re-united. Mirena e Floro was the work of two composers, Handel’s London rival Bononcini, and Gasparini, one of the leading Italian opera composers of the day. The plot again concerns the quarrels and reconciliation of lovers, who use various tricks and disguises to achieve their ends.

Bulgarian-born Emil Tabakov combines the roles of conductor and composer. His Concerto for Two Flutes and Orchestra, written in 2000 at the request of the French flautist Patrick Gallois, to whom it is dedicated, has been performed with great success in Turkey, Russia, Mexico and Bulgaria. Its exotic scoring includes maracas, tambourine and the tamburo bulgaro. The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra celebrates the anniversary of the Turkish army, founded in 209 B.C. A virtuosic work in the traditional three-movement sequence of the classical concerto, it is scored for a large symphony orchestra and has already attracted several eminent pianists.

WEISS
LUTE SONATAS VOL 8
Roberto Barto (lute)
|
|
When Sylvius Leopold Weiss died (in 1750, the year of Bach’s death), he was eulogised as Europe’s greatest lutenist and one of Germany’s best musicians. The Naxos series devoted to his complete lute works continues with three fine sonatas in the form of dance suites. They range in style from the grandeur of the Allemande which opens Sonata No. 36, to the unbroken melody in the Allemande of Sonata No. 19 and the fiery Gigue which concludes Sonata No. 34, perhaps his best known Sonata. As ever, Weiss makes full and virtuosic use of the sonority of the lute.

BORIS TCHAIKOVSKY
SYMPHONY NO 1, THE MURMURING FOREST & AFTER THE BALL SUITES
Saratov Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Kirill Ershov (conductor), Volgograd Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Serov (conductor)
|
|
Boris Tchaikovsky is now becoming widely recognised as one of the most important Russian composers of our time. His First Symphony (1947) made a profound impression on Shostakovich, but owing to Stalin’s campaign against dissident Soviet composers it was only premiered in 1962. This is its first recording. The Murmuring Forest dramatises a novel about a forest-dweller living at the mercy of a cruel squire. Employing a rich orchestral palette, its score was thought lost until its rediscovery by The Boris Tchaikovsky Society. After the Ball was inspired by a Tolstoy story. It includes an especially beautiful Waltz that could have been written by the earlier (and unrelated) Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

THE WINDS OF NAGUAL: WIND BAND CLASSICS
WORKS BY COLGRASS, DVORAK, GILLINGHAM & RIMSKY-KORSAKOV
Ohio State University Wind Symphony, Russel C Mikkelson (conductor)
|
|
Michael Colgrass’ Winds of Nagual was inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda and his experiences with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer, delving into the secrets of pre-Columbian wisdom. David Gillingham’s No Shadow of Turning is based on a hymn-tune, Great is Thy Faithfulnesss. Dvorak's Serenade for Winds Op 44 led conductor Russel Mikkelson to arrange the lovely Serenade for Strings for wind band. Donald Hunsberger’s arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s popular Flight of the Bumblebee was originally written as a solo for jazz trumpeter Winton Marsalis. In the present transcription, he assigns the solo line to various instruments of the band.

BUSONI
PIANO MUSIC VOL 3
Wolf Harden (piano)
|
|
Federico Busoni’s music synthesises his Italian and German ancestry: emotion and intellect, imagination and discipline, often allied with a re-creative approach to the musical past. His arrangement of Bach’s Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in D minor represents the virtuoso transcription, derived from Brahms and Liszt, at its most commanding. Tanzwalzer, dedicated ‘to the memory of Johann Strauss’ is a homage to the golden age of the Viennese waltz. Drawing on Amerindian rhythms and melodies, the Indian Diary depicts life among the North American Indians whose wretched plight Busoni had witnessed on a visit to America in 1910.

SAMMARTINI
GERUSALEMME, CONFITEBUR & SYMPHONIES
Silvia Mapelli, Filippo Ravizza, Giorgio Tiboni, Miroslava Yordanova, Symphonica Ensemble, Daniele Ferrari (conductor)
|
|
Sammartini had a long and active musical career, working as maestro di cappella or organist in ten different churches, yet surprisingly few of his sacred compositions survive. In the sacred cantata Gerusalemme, set to a text from another of his cantatas, La perfidia giudaica nella sanctissima Passione di Gesu Cristo, vocal texture is dominated by a typically Italianate melodiousness and virtuosity, while the orchestral writing is full of daring harmonies, sparkling themes, and an inexhaustible wealth of ideas. Other sacred cantatas by Sammartini are available on Naxos 8557431, 8557432 and 8570254.

SYMPHONIES NOS 4 & 12
Jana Valaskova (soprano), Brno Philharmonic Choir, Cantus Mixed Choir, Echo Youth Choir, Slovak National Opera Chorus, Slovak Philharmonic Chorus, Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Leaper (conductor)
|
|
A lifelong admirer of German musical culture, literature and thought, Havergal Brian wrote his Fourth Symphony ‘Das Siegeslied’ (Psalm of Victory) at a time when Germany’s cultural heritage was being distorted by nationalism. Scored for double chorus, soprano and an orchestra of massive proportions, the work comprises two wild, martial movements enclosing a slow and contemplative one. With its peculiarly pitiless text and music of barbaric splendour, the Symphony is Brian’s apocalyptic vision of the direction in which Germany was heading. For the single-movement Twelfth Symphony, Brian still employs a large orchestra, but the language is pared down to essentials.

VIENNESE OPERETTA CLASSIC Johann Strauss II captivated not only Vienna but also the whole of Europe and America with his abundantly tuneful dances, marches and operettas. Johannes Brahms was among the luminaries in the audience for the premiere of Jabuka (The Apple Festival) at Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 12 October 1894. The audience demanded encore after encore, and this, according to the critic of the Neue Freie Presse, resulted in 'the splendid high point of the evening'.

A few original works aside, the transcriptions included on this disc all feature a prominent cello part, and a good number of them come from Liszt’s last years, 1880-86. Works include La lugubre gondola, Consolation no 3, the first and second Elegies, Romance oublie, Tristia - La Vallee d'Obermann, Orphee & Nuage gris.

Sylvia Georgieva (harpsichord)
|
|
BETWEEN SCARLATTI & MOZART Georg Anton Benda composed some 50 harpsichord sonatas and sonatinas, 18 of which are featured on this engaging 4-CD set. They combine the virtuosity of Domenico Scarlatti and the sensibility of CPE Bach with a foretaste of the Classical style later perfected by Haydn and Mozart. A very enjoyable repertoire to discover.
