- Soloist Jacek Muzyk, a native of Poland, isprincipal French horn player with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

CONCERTOS FOR A GOOD FRIEND Mozart wrote his horn concertos, three of them complete and one lacking its slow movement, for the former Salzburg horn-player Ignaz Leutgeb, who had returned to his native Vienna in 1777. Leutgeb was particularly skilled in the relatively new technique of hand-stopping and had won much praise in Paris, as well as in Vienna. The concertos belong to the final period of Mozart's life, works written at the height of his powers.

GRANADOS
PIANO MUSIC VOL 9
Douglas Riva (piano)
- Scarlatti’s sonatas are much loved by listeners and performers alike
- Premiere recording of these arrangements by Spanish composer Granados
- Douglas Riva is the Assistant Director of the 18-volume critical edition of the Complete Works for Piano of Enrique Granados
|
|
SCARLATTI SONATAS TRANSCRIBED In his piano transcriptions of harpsichord sonatas principally by Scarlatti, Granados tackled the task of presenting virtually unknown works to a contemporary public. His arrangements, with occasional modifications of harmony, transpose these 18th century sonatas into the idiom of the modern piano. They are presented here for the first time as a complete collection on disc.

This 2-CD album, Mystic Classics, presents a selection of such music by a number of important modern composers.

WIDOR
ORGAN SYMPHONIES EXCERPTS
Robert Delcamp (organ)
- Widor’s Toccata is an evergreen organ spectacular
- His other works for organ include many equally thrilling and beautiful movements that are, nonetheless, seldom heard
- Robert Delcamp is an acclaimed organist based at Sewanee University in the USA
|
|
WONDERFUL FRENCH ORGAN MASTERPIECES Charles-Marie Widor’s ten organ symphonies, inspired by the magnificent Cavaillé-Coll organ at Saint-Sulpice in Paris revolutionised the art of organ playing and composition in France. This disc presents his famous Symphony No 5, which concludes with the mighty Toccata, and selected highlights from the others, such as the Andante cantabile from Symphony No 4, one of the composer’s loveliest slow movements, and the hugely virtuosic Allegro from Symphony No 6, which features one of the most exciting crescendos in the organ repertoire. Bach’s Memento is a tribute to a composer whose reputation Widor did much to re-establish in France.

Cinquecento
- Discover the sublime music of a little-known Renaissance master
- Sumptuous recording and impeccable singing by Cinquecento: ‘An all-male a cappella ensemble, they sound clear and bright, and articulate the music lucidly’ (Gramophone)
- Comprising six professional singers from five European countries, Cinquecento takes its name from the Italian term for the sixteenth century.
|
|
IDEAL INTERPRETATIONS OF RENAISSANCE POLYPHONY Cinquecento's premiere Hyperion Recording (Music for the Court of Maximilian II CDA67579) was acclaimed as 'revelatory' for the ensemble's mellifluous, expressive singing. Now comes its second release, with the music of Jacob Regnart (c1540-99), whose six-part Mass is a splendid example of the repertoire that enriched the Habsburg court during the late 16th Century. Eight other sacred works demonstrate Regnart's extraordinary abilities and emotional range.

LA RUE
COMPLETE MAGNIFICATS & THREE SALVE REGINAS
Viva Voce, Peter Schubert (director)

|
DIVINE VOCAL MUSIC Among the composers of Josquin's generation (c1500), Pierre de La Rue was a leading composer working north of the Alps, mainly at the Habsburg-Burgundian chapel. La Rue became known for his musical expressions of grief, such as his settings of the Salve Regina. The Magnificats, of course, are celebratory works whose sparkling musical texture shows the composer in another light.

ROMANTIC RUSSIAN CHAMBER PIECES The piano works of Nikolay Medtner are finally achieving the recognition they merit, yet his compositions for violin and piano await discovery. This first of two discs of Medtner’s five violin and piano works opens with his last and greatest work for these instruments, Sonata No 3 ‘Epica’, completed in 1938 - unashamedly Romantic and distinctly Russian with its frequent allusions to folk-dances and Orthodox liturgical chants. The impassioned Three Nocturnes were inspired by Goethe, one of the composer’s favourite poets.

BEAUTIFUL BRITISH CHAMBER MUSIC At the height of his career Sir Charles Stanford held a leading position in British music, not only as a teacher of many of the most important composers of the new generation, but as one of the most significant British composers to have emerged immediately before Elgar. Chiefly remembered today for his Irish Rhapsodies, Seven Symphonies and Clarinet Concerto, Stanford composed many chamber works, including several for clarinet written in what might be described as a ‘Brahmsian’ idiom.

VARIATIONS ON 'AMERICA' & OTHER WORKS
‘The President’s Own’ United States Marine Band, Colonel Timothy W Foley (director)
|
|
THE STARS AND STRIPES Charles Ives, like his elder contemporary John Philip Sousa, was born and raised amid military quicksteps and medleys of patriotic songs. Both became skilled professional musicians in their early teens, yet while Sousa held steadfastly to the regularity of America’s military pulse, Ives began to blaze the trail toward a uniquely American music. Beginning with the remarkable Variations on ‘America’, all of the works heard on this disc are to a greater or lesser degree transcriptions or adaptations for the modern American concert band.

ARNOLD
SYMPHONIES NOS 1-9
National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Andrew Penny (conductor)
|
|
While having a command of music in the popular idiom, Malcolm Arnold is, in fact, a composer of considerable stature; technically assured, fluent and prolific, providing music that gives pleasure, but that also has a more sombre side. Donald Mitchell has compared Arnold, illuminatingly, with Dickens, both of them great entertainers but both well aware of the human predicament, unsettlingly revealed, as he points out, in his remarkable series of symphonies.

BEETHOVEN'S GREATEST RIVAL Anton Eberl (1765-1807) was perhaps Beethoven's greatest Viennese rival in the field of instrumental music. A good friend of Mozart, Eberl later moved to St Petersburg, before returning to his home town. These chamber works are notable for their freshness and fiery power, and are beautifully performed on this disc.

VIENNESE OPERETTA WITH ITALIAN FLAVOUR Von Suppe's many operettas are more than merely light-weight comic works. Fatinitza abounds in catchy melodies, Viennese waltzes, lyrical bel canto arias and a touch of the temperamentality of Italian opera buffa. This 2-CD set presents the original 1876 version in a vibrant studio recording featuring the 2006 Bad Ischel Festival cast.

LOVE SONGS FROM THE NORTH Danish music is full of Romantic serenades that evoke the summer light and the mystery of night. There is also a mixture of happiness and melancholy in many Danish serenades and love songs. Music by Hartmann, Kunzen, Lange-Muller, Nielsen and Weyse makes for a charming compilation.

His music, characterised as the rebirth of 'tonality after the death of tonality', gives the performers an important role in shaping the composition.

PIANO TO THE FORE In these works George Onslow (1784-1853) began to free himself from the influence of Classicism, liberating the piano parts with virtuosic leaps, arpeggios and other sparkling effects which point towards the Romanticism of Chopin or Liszt. The violin, by contrast, tends to maintain a more lyrical character.

COMMUNIST CLASSICS The tumultuous, impulsive and plaintive strains of Armenian music all found their way into Khachaturian's music, which also takes note of the ideas of Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev and Ravel. The rhythmic drive of the 1936 Piano Concerto's outer movements contrasts with its lyrical slow movement. The single-movement 3rd Symphony was composed in 1947.

MAHLER
SYMPHONY NO 5
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Haitink (conductor)
|
|
REMASTERED QUADROPHONIC RECORDING Originally recorded in 4-channel surround sound in 1970, Haitink's interpretation of Mahler's dramatic 5th Symphony continued the 'Mahler tradition' established in Amsterdam by the composer himself, followed in turn by Willem Mengelberg. The Concertgebouw's unique acoustic gives this recording a special audio quality on this hybrid SACD.

CARUSO - THE EARLY RECORDINGS
Enrico Caruso (tenor)
|
|
MUSICAL HISTORY COMES BACK TO LIFE During the first decade of last century, a familiar debating question was 'Did Caruso make the gramophone or did the gramophone make Caruso?' Here are 27 recordings from 1902 (Gramophone & Typewriter Company original pressings) and 1904 to 1910 (Victor) that suggest the answer: 'They made each other.'
