BEETHOVEN
Piano & Violin Sonatas Op 23 No 4 & Op.30 No.2; Variations WoO40
Andreas Staier (pianoforte), Daniel Sepec (violin) |
|
At the turn of the 19th century, Prince Lichnowsky made Beethoven a hand-made gift: a set of four string quartet instruments, which the 30-year-old composer marked with his seal and a large carved “B”. One of them was a violin made in Salzburg around 1700. Rediscovered and authenticated in 1995 by the experts of the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, this unexpected legacy is here presented for the first time in a wholly appropriate recording project: Sonatas nos.4 and 7, the very embodiment of Beethovenian élan terrible, are performed by two outstanding artists!

Anima Eterna |
Jos van Immerseel continues his musical project. And Mozart represents an essential component in his recording career, whether as pianist (he released the complete concertos 15 years ago now), at the head of the orchestra Anima Eterna with which he has revealed outstanding conducting talents (in the last three symphonies, nos.39-41, and Symphony no.29), or in his eagerness to showcase the skills of his partners: Konzertmeister Midori Seiler in two violin concertos, Jane Gower in the Bassoon Concerto.

Cinematic music played by Roland Pöntinen
Roland Pöntinen (piano)
|
|
From the very beginning – even during the era of the silent movie – music has been recognised as a major ingredient of the cinematic experience, and great filmmakers have been extremely painstaking in their choice of music. When selecting from existing music, directors have been particularly fond of using works for solo piano.

ALLGÉN
Sonata for solo violin
Ulf Wallin (violin)
|
|
The sonata is monumental in length and in content, spanning 3 discs in its entirety. Allgén’s masterpiece is played by the excellent Ulf Wallin, whose previous recordings on BIS have been highly praised, The Gramophone describing his performance of Schoenberg (BISCD1407) as having “great elegance”, while his “purity of tone and intonation” show him to be one of the leading violinists of today.

|
Almost twenty years after his death it is still difficult to properly evaluate the work of Russian composer Alexander Lokshin (1920-1987). His uncompromising stance led to numerous conflicts with the Soviet regime, resulting in him being banned from the Moscow Conservatory twice – first as a student and later as a teacher.

Masaaki Suzuki (harpsichord) |
|
In between concerts, recordings and tours with his Bach Collegium Japan, the indefatigable Masaaki Suzuki still manages to make time for the harpsichord – to the joy of reviewers and music lovers alike. His previous recordings of Bach’s keyboard music have been highly praised.

ERICSSON
The Four Beasts’ Amen
Hans-Ola Ericsson (organ), Susanne Rydén (soprano), Tommy Björk (percussion), Anders Hannus (sound direction/electronics) |
|
An outstanding organist, especially in the field of contemporary music, Hans-Ola Ericsson has collaborated with composers such as Messiaen, Cage and Ligeti on the interpretation of their works. (His recording of the complete organ works by Messiaen is considered by many to be one of the finest accounts of this central 20th-century repertoire.) But Ericsson is also a composer, one of great integrity and originality.

RIHM
Chiffre-Zyklus
MusikFabrik, Stefan Asbury |
|
It was not until 1988 that the cycle of nine compositions was written. Rihm made further additions to this unique work group in 2004 with Nach-Schrift and another Chiffre. Elements from the first piece such as the prominent hammering of the piano figures reoccur — in modified form — in the subsequent pieces, providing us with a fascinating musical journey.

Often compared to his contemporary Paganini in virtuosity and composition, Polish Violinist, Karol Lipinski proved himself by forging past the showy, mesmerizing skills of the virtuoso, displaying real compositional depth through the orchestral interaction with his soloists. Lipinski’s music never tries to be ostentatious.

MAHLER
Das Lied von der Erde Version for chamber orchestra by Schoenberg (completed by Riehn)
Birgit Remmert (mezzo soprano), Hans Peter Blochwitz (tenor); Ensemble Musique Oblique, Philippe Herreweghe (conductor) |
|
It was in 1920 that Schoenberg undertook a transcription for small orchestra of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (a work he particularly venerated), intended for the Viennese Society for Private Musical Performances. But he was unable to complete it, and it was only in 1983 that the musicologist Rainer Riehn took up where Schoenberg had left off and produced a finished version. The result is quite extraordinary: Schoenberg not only managed to reproduce all the original sonorities, he also brought out the extreme density of the score.

Vivaldi wrote more cello concertos (twenty-eight, at the last count) than anyone else to date. This exciting new recording presents six works by the Italian master
and one particularly fine concerto whose attribution is in question; all seven are wonderful examples of the form to which Vivaldi continually returned throughout his long composing
career. Vivaldi is not known to have been a cellist, but his interest in the instrument can be ascribed to a distinguished list of virtuosic performers at the Pietà, the Venetian
orphanage whose musical prowess was the envy of contemporary Europe. Vivaldi himself worked for the institution for some years, continuing to supply fresh compositions long after
other engagements took him further afield. Jonathan Cohen is a young British cellist, rapidly developing a versatile reputation for sensitive and accomplished performance across a
range of genres. His mellifluous interpretations of these concertos are a joy of hear – if his name is new, this disc will surely convince a wider audience of an astonishing talent.
Accompaniment is provided by Robert King and The King’s Consort, acknowledged leaders in the interpretation of Vivaldi.

MOZART
Piano Trios K502, K542, K564
The Florestan Trio (Anthony Marwood violin, Richard Lester cello, Susan Tomes piano) |
|
The piano trio had thrived as a genre suited to amateur music-making in eighteenth-century parlours, but it was only when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart turned his hand to the medium that it was transformed into the ‘art form’ we know today. Emerging from the home into the concert hall, piano parts became significantly taxing (Mozart wrote them for himself to play) and the violin and cello were elevated from accompanying roles to positions of equal prominence. The three trios on this disc were written at the zenith of Mozart’s powers, K502 in 1786, K542 and K564 in the second half of 1788. All three are masterpieces, a sense of profound musical thought ever-present beneath their tranquil exteriors.

CLEMENTI
Piano Sonatas
Nikolai Demidenko piano |
|
‘If your acquaintance with Clementi’s output is limited to the Op 36 Sonatinas you dutifully practised in your youth, Demidenko’s exalted interpretation of Clementi will come as nothing short of a revelation. This release serves as a landmark recording of these unjustly neglected masterworks’ (Soundscapes, Australia)

“From the Netherlands-based outcrop of the old Philips label comes an exceptional coupling of the masterly, youthful F minor symphony…and the comparatively neglected No. 6. Jurowski brings an awesome majesty to the powerful, Mahlerian funeral march of the sixth…and his RNO is simply dazzling in the high jinks of the scherzo passages in both works…this shouldn’t be missed.” (Sunday Times) (GRAMOPHONE) EDITIOR’S CHOICE

The Birds and the Springs
Bengt Berg (organ) |
|
This CD is a compilation of two legendary organ recordings that were issued on LP in 1974. It reminds us once again that a first-class organ, a brilliant organist and state-of-the-art sound recording produce a musical result that remains as satisfying today as it seemed at the time. The disc also shows how convincingly a “modern” organ can perform both sonorous classical music as well as mysterious impressionism of later French music. One only needs to put the disc in the player to be transported to the Matteus Church in Stockholm or the Vånga Church with its cathedral-like atmosphere.
