Mozart Flute Concertos
Sharon Bezaly (flute), Julie Palloc (harp), Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Juha Kangas (conductor)
- Best-selling re-release with NEW RECORDING of Mozart’s Flute & Harp Concerto
- A welcome return to the catalogue
- Superb hybrid SACD stereo sound
- Stunning new instrumental cadenzas written especially for this recording
|
When this disc was first released, the response was electrifying. Sharon Bezaly was described as ‘God’s gift to the flute’ in The Times (UK), and BBC Music Magazine was highly complimentary: ‘Bezaly's exquisite, technically immaculate, compelling playing sets new standards in this repertoire, as do Kalevi Aho's stunning cadenzas, composed especially for this recording.’ The disc received top marks in Le Monde de la Musique, Crescendo, Musica and other magazines as well as on radio stations and web sites such as Classics Today. This staggeringly successful title – 145,000 copies sold worldwide! – is now again available with the important inclusion of a newly made recording of the Concerto for Flute and Harp. At a session in October 2007, we reunited the performers and recording crew of the 2005 disc in the original venue, with the addition of the eminent harpist Julie Palloc as co-soloist. Furthermore, Finnish composer Kalevi Aho again provided the cadenzas for the work. The result is not to be missed – a 24-carat, complete collection of all Mozart’s works for flute and orchestra, on a hybrid SACD with the extremely generous playing time of 81 minutes and 52 seconds!

Schubert Mass in E-flat D950
Susan Gritton (soprano), Pamela Helen Stephen (mezzo-soprano), Mark Padmore (tenor), James Gilchrist (tenor), Matthew Rose (bass), Collegium Musicum 90, Richard Hickox (conductor)
- Thrilling new recording from Richard Hickox, who is much loved by Australian music lovers
- Stellar cast of performers
- Schubert’s final Mass is a towering musical achievement
- Other Hickox recordings include his critically-acclaimed interpretation of Dvorak’s beloved opera Rusalka (CHAN10449) starring Cheryl Barker with Opera Australia
|
Hot on the heels of Richard Hickox's highly acclaimed classical masses of Haydn and Hummel and Beethoven, comes Schubert. The same award winning team has been assembled to give more world-class performances. Schubert’s final mass and most ambitious setting was composed during the summer of 1828, only months before his death. Richard Hickox has long wanted to record this powerful work. The recording follows the successful concert at the 2007 BBC Proms. The same stellar cast is brought together, including Susan Gritton, James Gilchrist and Mark Padmore, accompanied by Collegium Musicum 90. The Guardian commented on the Proms performance: ‘it was graciously sung and conducted…’ The Daily Telegraph wrote: ‘Wednesday night brought Schubert’s wonderful and rarely-performed late E flat Mass, performed by some fine soloists and the ‘early music’ orchestra and choir Collegium Musicum 90, conducted by Richard Hickox. It’s close to being Schubert’s last piece, and has an amazing harmonic daring mingled with a minatory severity – a very potent mix’.

I wrote this as a tribute to his eternal influence,' Steve says. 13 guitar solos including works by Bach, Granados, and Barrios with three Hackett originals - 'The Fountain Suite', 'Cascada' and 'Sapphires'. Stephen Hough (piano)
- Best-selling Stephen Hough is ‘the pianist’s pianist’, admired for his pure artistry
- Fascinating new album explores the music of Mozart and works by others that pay tribute to him
- Unusual selection of works makes this disc a real treat
|
We are delighted to present this eagerly awaited recital disc from Stephen Hough. This fascinating programme begins with some of Mozart’s most audacious and forward-looking piano works. Mozart’s Fantasia in C minor K475 is a wonderfully unfettered and uninhibited work, suffused with high drama and a sense of constantly shifting moods. The Piano Sonata in B flat major K333 is a similarly ground-breaking piece, developing in scale and drama from its lyrical, gentle opening. The second part of the disc features Mozart as seen by others, from the homage of a near-contemporary right up to the modern day, with Hough’s own irresistibly quirky Mozart imaginings, and from elegant miniatures to Liszt/Busoni’s virtuosic Figaro Fantasy. This disc is full of surprises, and demonstrates the full range of Hough’s extraordinary artistry. Stephen Hough has toured Australia to great acclaim for Musica Viva and has a firm following among music lovers of all ages.

Beethoven Symphonies and Overtures
Complete Symphonies, Overtures - Egmont, The Consecration of the House, Coriolanus, The Ruins of Athens, The Creatures of Prometheus
Anima Eterna, Jos van Immerseel (conductor)
- Thrilling new recording of Beethoven Symphonies and Overtures by Anima Eterna conducted by Jos van Immerseel
- The musical equivalent of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling restored to its original unblemished condition
- Based on Baerenreiter’s recent critical edition and on original research
- Bound to become a classic set
- Great price for this 6-CD Box Set from Zig Zag
|
This amazing 6-CD Box Set establishes a new benchmark for the Beethoven symphonies and overtures, and will surely become an absolutely classic collection. Anima Eterna is a period-intrument orchestra boasting many of Europe's most famous players (including Midori Seiler (lead violin), Frank Theuns, Marc Hantai (flute), Antoine Torunczyk (oboe), Erich Hoeprich (clarinet), and many more) under the inspired direction of Jos van Immerseel. Winds, brass and strings are perfectly balanced and positively glow with the authentic sound of late 18th- and early 19th-century Vienna. Performing at the sparklingly high concert pitch of A=440, respecting Beethoven's own metronome marks and expressive instructions, and observing the surprisingly small size of a Viennese Classical orchestra (from 37 to 56 members), Anima Eterna achieves the seemingly impossible, revitalising the way we hear these masterpieces of classical music. The result is an unbelievable combination of crystal clarity and power, thrilling impetus and startling contrast, helping us to understand just how revolutionary these symphonies were (and still are). Using Baerenreiter's recent critical editions, augmented by original research, van Immerseel interprets Beethoven's music with such amazing flair that you'll think you're hearing them for the first time. And you'll want to listen again and again.

Blancafort Piano Music Vol 4
Pastorel-la, American Souvenir, Sonatina antiga, Ermita i panorama, Cavatina i dialeg, Romanca, intermedi i marxa
Miguel Villalba (piano)
The Catalan composer Manuel Blancafort believed strongly in the importance of nationalism in music and was keen to follow in the footsteps of Albeniz, Granados and Falla, but always with a Catalan bias. Most of the works on this recording belong to a prolific period of creative activity towards the end of the 1920s. Depicting a transatlantic journey to the USA, with impressions of both the ocean and life on board ship, the American Souvenir suite also includes a vivid yet tender homage to Charlie Chaplin. Inspired by the classicism of Bach and Scarlatti, the Sonatina antiga surprises with its bold harmonic writing. The impressionistic Ermita i panorama conjures up, through the development of a folk tune, the silence of twilight within the Catalan hermitage of Puiggracios and the view of the landscape from the summit of the hill.

Schoenberg Chamber Symphony No 2, Die glueckliche Hand, Wind Quintet
Mark Beesley (bass), Simon Joly Chorale, New York Woodwind Quintet, Philharmonia Orchestra, Robert Craft (conductor)
The little-known Second Chamber Symphony ought to be the most popular of Schoenberg’s later masterpieces. Neither atonal nor twelve-tone, it contrasts a lush, melodious, dramatic first movement with a rapid and richly polyphonic second movement. Die glueckliche Hand is a pantomime for two silent actors and one solo singer, 'the man'. The music is very compressed, and its two middle scenes, apart from the lines by the Man, are purely orchestral. Realising that a work of 38 minutes in atonal idiom for five winds might be less audience-friendly than any of his music heretofore, Schoenberg imparted his Wind Quintet with a display of instrumental virtuosity that surpassed anything even he had ever attempted.

Toch Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata No 2, Burlesken
Spectrum Concerts Berlin: Daniel Blumenthal (piano), Annette von Hehn (violin), Julia-Maria Kretz (violin), Hartmut Rohde (viola), Frank Dodge (cello)
Since 1997 Spectrum Concerts Berlin has made an important contribution to the growing recognition and appreciation of Ernst Toch’s unique musical voice. One of the most neglected 20th-century composers, and a noted teacher and writer on musical composition, Toch was a self-taught modernist who learned music’s fundamentals from the Mozart string quartets. This rare recording of Toch’s solo and chamber music features the powerful and defiantly vivid Piano Quintet (1938), written in Hollywood following the composer’s escape to the USA, and the poignantly melancholy Violin Sonata No 2 (1928), a product of Toch’s Berlin years when his music was regularly performed to appreciative audiences.

Anderson Orchestral Music Vol 2
Alistair Young (piano), David McCallum (trumpet), BBC Concert Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin (conductor)
Leroy Anderson etched out his own unique place in American music as a composer rigorously trained in the classical tradition whose records topped the pop charts, a meticulous arranger of music whose own melodies were crafted with inventive precision. While he laboured alone over each measure of each piece, the result sounded as if he had pulled one marvelous tune after another out of his hat almost at will. Here, in the first complete cycle of Anderson’s orchestral music, the Anderson family has made available several pieces that the composer did not release, with some first recordings scattered among the familiar and not-so-familiar titles. Volume 2 contains most of the rarely-heard works from Anderson’s last decade. Vol 1 (8559313) was an ABC Classic FM CD of the Week in March this year.

Wuorinen Ashberyana, Fenton Songs I and II
Lucy Shelton (soprano), Brentano String Quartet, Da Camera of Houston, Charles Wuorinen (conductor)
The music of distinguished American composer Charles Wuorinen is notable for its compositional wit, dynamic virtuosity and intellectual rigor. This CD features vocal chamber works from the late 1990s to 2007, a new piano work, and Wuorinen’s ‘remakings’ of music by Josquin des Pres. Ashberyana, a major new work commissioned by Da Camera of Houston, sets the dazzling poetry of John Ashbery for a tour-deforce ensemble led by the composer. Fenton Songs I and Fenton Songs II offer contrasting poems by James Fenton, ranging from lyrical confessions of love to the horrors of Tiananmen Square. Two personal solo piano pieces – one dedicated to conductor James Levine – and Josquiniana, composed for the Brentano Quartet, complete this compelling portrait of one of today’s most important musical voices.

Heggie For a Look or a Touch, Schwarz In Memoriam, Laitman The Seed of Dream
Morgan Smith (baritone), Julian Patrick (actor), Julian Schwarz (cello), Erich Parce (baritone), Music of Remembrance, Mina Miller (artistic director, piano)
Based on the true story of two teenage lovers the Holocaust tore apart forever, the dramatic song cycle For a Look or a Touch casts long-awaited light on the fate of gay Germans in the Holocaust. By noted young American opera composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer, the work juxtaposes the exuberant freedom of pre-World War II Berlin with the brutal Nazi horrors that followed, while making an eloquent, poignant plea for remembrance. Seattle Symphony’s Gerard Schwarz penned In Memoriam, a beautifully meditative, elegiac piece for cello and string quartet, in honor of cellist David Tonkonogui (1958–2003). From acclaimed American art song composer Lori Laitman comes The Seed of Dream, a powerful song cycle based on five poems written by Abraham Sutzkever during his imprisonment in the Vilna Ghetto. The lyrical intensity of these poems bears witness to the transcendent power of art in resistance to the forces of cruelty. These works were commissioned by Music of Remembrance, a Seattle-based non-profit organization dedicated to remembering Holocaust musicians through their art (www.musicofremembrance.org).

Bottesini Grand Concerto in F sharp minor, Grand Duo
Thomas Martin (double bass), Jose-Luis Garcia (violin), Emma Johnson (clarinet), English Chamber Orchestra, Andrew Litton (conductor)
Giovanni Bottesini was not only among the most famous double bass virtuosos of his time, but he was also a distinguished conductor and composer. Known to some as the Paganini of the double bass, he significantly extended the technical possibilities of the instrument. The Gran Concerto in F sharp minor is arguably Bottesini’s most accomplished and involved composition for the double bass in which the instrument’s resources are fully exploited with virtuoso passages and adventurous modulations. The popular Gran Duo Concertante, originally scored for two double basses, was reworked by Paganini’s only disciple, Camillo Sivori, who rewrote and greatly expanded one of the double bass parts for the violin.

Finzi Dies Natalis, Farewell to Arms, Two Sonnets
James Gilchrist (tenor), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, David Hill (conductor)
Quintessentially Finzi, the tender yet radiant Dies natalis, a setting of texts by the 17th-century poet Thomas Traherne, depicts both the first sensations of a child as it enters the world, and life’s tarnishing experience of the innocence of childhood. In Farewell to Arms, a further example of Finzi’s enthusiasm for 17th-century poets, the steady but inevitable tramp of time, symbolised by the measured bass and the tenor’s sad, arching melody, becomes a poignant symbol for the brevity of life as expressed in lines such as ‘O time too swift, O swiftness never ceasing’. Finzi knew all too well that ‘Beauty, strength, youth are flowers but fading seen’.

Lorenzo Palomo is one of the most successful contemporary Spanish composers. His Cantos del alma (Songs of the Soul) are settings of four poems by Juan Ramon Jimenez, 'a composition in which voice, clarinet and orchestra ... establish a poetic dialogue, both intimate and idyllic'. Palomo’s Sinfonia a Granada (Granada Symphony) was written in response to a commission from the area’s regional government. The composer himself has written, 'I have been faithful to the most authentic Andalusian music, introducing a number of Arabic and Hebraic melismas as well as cadences characteristic of flamenco'.

Beethoven Symphony No 9 (transcribed Liszt for 2 pianos)
Leon McCawley (piano 1), Ashley Wass (piano 2)
Liszt Complete Piano Music Vol 28 presents what must be one of the most audacious keyboard transcriptions of a vocal/choral/orchestral masterpiece in the history of music - Beethoven's mighty 9th Symphony. In 1851, he transcribed the Choral Symphony for two pianos, a version of the work that won the approval of Clara Schumann and Brahms, when they played it through on the occasion of the latter’s 22nd birthday in 1855. The transcription for two pianos, with its careful inclusion of original phrasing and occasional specification of the original instrumentation, avoids the obvious difficulties of a transcription for a single piano, partially solved there by the inclusion on extra staves of the choral parts of the last movement of the symphony.

Roussel Symphony No 2, Pour une fete de printemps, Suite in F Major
Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Stephane Deneve (conductor)
A perennial outsider in French music, Albert Roussel was the tutor of a whole generation of composers, including such diverse figures as Eric Satie and Edgard Varese. The three works included here outline the transitional phase in which Roussel’s mature idiom took shape. Most important of these is his Second Symphony, with its densely intricate orchestration and its wide range of expression, while Pour une fete de printemps is a symphonic poem that could be thought of as preparation for the larger work. With the Suite in F, Roussel arrived at his mature style; the piece is taut and economical in design, with a distinctly ‘contemporary’ feel.

Zemlinsky Cello Sonata, Three Pieces for Cello and Piano
Othmar Mueller (cello), Ernst Ottensamer (clarinet), Christopher Hinterhuber (piano)
The music of Alexander Zemlinsky has come to the attention of an increasingly wide public over the past quarter-century. As with many of his contemporaries, chamber music features prominently in Zemlinsky’s formative years. The three works on this recording, written during the 1890s, reveal a skilful and assured figure in the process of working free of influences, notably Brahms. The Cello Sonata is a substantial work, notable for a dark-hued slow movement and a warmly lilting finale. While indebted to Brahms in its scoring, the Clarinet Trio is nonetheless Zemlinsky in its formal and expressive approach, and today certainly ranks among his most performed works.

Weiss Lute Music Vol 9
Robert Barto (baroque lute)
When Silvius Leopold Weiss died (in 1750, the year of Bach’s death), he was eulogised as Europe’s greatest lutenist and one of Germany’s most gifted musicians. This series devoted to his complete lute works continues with the large-scale Sonata No 52. Thought to be a late work of the composer’s full maturity, this Sonata is notable for its extended movements and wide use of adventurous chromaticism and modulation. The Sonata No 32 makes much use of the extra low notes characteristic of the enlarged thirteen-course lute introduced around 1717. In the Sonata No 94 Weiss seems consciously to be experimenting in a style more akin to that of the following generation.

Frolov Music for Violin and Piano
Nicolas Koeckert (violin), Rudolf Joachim Koeckert (violin), Kristina Miller (piano)
The son of a violin teacher and an accompanist, Igor Alexandrovich Frolov grew up in a musically rich environment. As well as a composer, he is a violinist, a conductor, and a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. Although his roots are grounded in classical tradition, elements of jazz can be found in many of Frolov’s compositions, such as the witty and entertaining Divertissement and his arrangement of Jerome Kern’s Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. The Concert Fantasy on Themes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess contains various changes of mood and a multitude of virtuosic passages for the violin, before the brilliant coda concludes this challenging fantasy, popular with both performers and audiences.

Music played an important role in the Renaissance theatre and Shakespeare brought new subtlety to its use. In a theatre without lights and sets, it fell to music to underline mood, whether for magic, comedy, feasting or pathos. Here are thirty or so settings from Shakespeare’s lifetime by Morley, Johnson, Dowland, Byrd, Ferrabosco and others, including lyrics set to ballad tunes that would have been very familiar to the actors in his company.

Nielsen Symphonies Nos 1, 6
Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Michael Schonwandt (conductor)
The most important Danish composer of the first part of the 20th century, Carl Nielsen was prolific in almost all genres. Dissociating himself strongly from Late Romanticism, Nielsen orientated himself increasingly towards the new currents in European music without at any time abandoning his very personal and idiosyncratic style. The Six Symphonies, which become increasingly adventurous as the cycle progresses, are essentially tonal, emotionally direct works, which alternate long lines of melody with passages of blazing energy. The exuberant Symphony No 1 is here coupled with the enigmatic Symphony No 6, which has been described as 'music of clear sunlight and sudden shadows'.

Zeynep Ucbasaran (piano)
A colleague of Bela Bartok in the collection of Turkish folk-music, Adnan Saygun was among the most distinguished Turkish composers of the twentieth century, writing music that combined Western techniques with essential elements of his country's own musical traditions. His piano music includes works that explore characteristic ‘limping’ rhythm, Turkish dance-forms and, in Inci’s Book, children's pieces of charm and simplicity.

Dohnanyi Violin Concertos Nos 1, 2
Michael Ludwig (violin), Royal Scottish National Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta (conductor)
Best known for his Variations on a Nursery Theme for piano and orchestra, the Hungarian composer Erno von Dohnanyi also wrote two published Symphonies, two Piano Concertos and two Violin Concertos, all of which have been undeservedly neglected. The rarely heard Violin Concerto No 1, notable for its Brahmsian slow movement, combines virtuosity and lyricism. Written in the mould of the great Romantic violin concerto, and with an unmistakably Hungarian flavour, the superbly orchestrated and remarkably inventive Violin Concerto No 2 (1949-50) is worthy of being ranked alongside the Concertos by Barber and Korngold.

Bach Six Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas
Ilya Kaler (violin)
Profound in spirit and monumental in scope Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are arguably the most difficult original solo works ever written for the violin. Their formidable technical challenges, especially the persistent use of multiple stops, are not just virtuoso features but are the natural result of the complexity of Bach’s musical ideas and his understanding of the instrument. The crowning glory of the set is the immense Chaconne from the Partita in D minor, a set of variations on a theme which makes unprecedented demands on the performer’s expressive and technical abilities.

Mayr David in spelunca Engaddi
Merit Ostermann (mezzo-soprano), Cornelia Horak (soprano), Ai Ichihara (soprano), Sibylla Duffe (soprano), Claudia Schneider (soprano), Simon Mayr Chorus and Ensemble, Franz Hauk (harpsichord, director)
Born near Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Simon Mayr spent the greater part of his career in Bergamo, a flourishing cultural and economic centre in the early nineteenth century. An important figure in the promotion of Viennese classicism in Italy, he combined, in his own style, the legacy of Vienna with the dramatic and melodic genius of Italy, and held a dominant position in Italian opera before the emergence of Rossini. His oratorio David in spelunca Engeddi (David in the Cave of Engedi), with a Latin text, was written in 1795 for the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, one of the four great charitable institutions there, known for the musical achievements of its members. The oratorio deals with the conflict between David and Saul, and the refusal of David to harm the Lord’s anointed, in spite of the opportunity offered him.

Rossini Piano Music Vol 1 Peches de vieillesse, Album de Chaumiere
Alessandro Marangoni (piano)
When Rossini drew a line under his own hugely successful operatic career at the age of 37, he spent his final years in Paris where he wrote numerous short piano pieces arranged in 14 volumes, which he jokingly called Peches de vieillesse (Sins of Old Age): experimental trifles which blur the boundaries between the irreverent and the serious. Volume VII, ‘Album de chaumiere’ (The Cottage Album) includes gems such as the delightful Petite polka chinoise, the intimate and touching Petite valse de boudoir and the decidedly reassuring Prelude inoffensif. The recording is rounded off with four solo piano pieces from Volume IX of the Peches, whose titles, like those of the other works on this disc, are playfully deceptive. The Melodie candide may be ostentatiously demure, but deep-down it is shameless.

Cranford
by Elizabeth Gaskell
read by Clare Wille
In the village of Cranford, decorum is maintained at all times. Despite their poverty, the ladies are never vulgar about money (or their lack of it!) and always follow the rules of propriety. But this discretion and gentility does not keep away tragedy; and when the worst happens, the Amazons of Cranford show the true strength of their honest affections. A masterpiece of social comedy, Cranford is as moving as it is funny, and as sharp as it it is tender. This Naxos AudioBook is the only unabridged recording of Gaskill's best-loved novel.

The Wealth of Nations
by Adam Smith
read by Sean Barrett
It was Adam Smith (1723-900 who first established economics as a separate branch of knowledge, and amny would say that his work has never been surpassed. The Wealth of Nations, which appeared in 1776, is the definitive text for all who believe that economic decisions are best left to markets, not governments. At the heart of Smith's doctrine is an optimistic view of self-interest. Though each individual seeks only personal gain, the collective result is increased prosperity, which benefits society as a whole. This skilful abridgement presents his main ideas and is clearly read by Sean Barrett in the only version of this classic work available on CD.

Discover Music of the Baroque Era
by Clive Unger-Hamilton
Grandiose and glamorous, Baroque music stands alone, written to glorify the courts of Europe in Italy, France, England, the German-speaking countries and Spain. Its greatest composers, including Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, head a fascinating cast of musical magicians, such as Albinoni, Buxtehude, Charpentier, Corelli, Lully, Pachelbel, Purcell and Scarlatti and others. Their lives are as intriguing as their music. We find virtuoso performers who earned their livings in the cathedrals of Europe while keeping company with kings and queens, and setting opera houses across the continent ablaze with their fabulous new music. Discover Music of the Baroque Era is rich in musical detail of the time, set against some of the greatest events in history and illustrated by a website containing 2 1/2 hours of masterpieces - both favourites and rarities - that give a marvellous feeling for what treasures the Age of the Baroque has to offer. Discover Music of the Classical Era
by Stephen Johnson
In music, the period from the middle to the end of the 18th century is usually referred to as the Classical Era. This was a period in which the art, literature and architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome were being rediscivered and re-evaluated, strongly influencing the 'modern' art of the time. Many of the immortal names of classical music lived during this time: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven among them, and also Stamitz, JC & CPE Bach, Boccherini, Gluck, Gossec and countless others. But this was also an epoch of immense social and political unrest, with challenges to the old established order culminating in the American and French Revolutions, which paved the way for the modern world. Discover Music of the Classical Era shows how all this was reflected in the music composed during these turbulent but also intensely creative and innovative years - music that remains 'classic' to this very day. Includes access to a dedicated website with 2 1/2 hours of great music.

Stravinsky A Portrait
Includes music from The Firebird, The Rite of Spring, The Soldier's Tale, Pulcinella, Les Noces, Piano Sonata, Oedipus Rex, Symphony of Psalms, Violin Concerto, Dumbarton Oaks, The Rake's Progress, Requiem Canticles, and more
Various Performers
2 CDs with over 50 tracks of Stravinsky's music plus a detailed essay by David Nice with photographs to illustrate the text. From the Russian fairy-tale enchantment of The Firebird to the austere ritual at the end of his Requiem Canticles composed over half a century later, Stravinsky's extraordinary creativity embraces a range of styles and tributes to composers of the past. He started under the guidance of Rimsky-Korsakov in pre-revolutionary St Petersburg and ended his life in America having made a very special kind of peace with the rigorous (serial) techniques of Schoenberg and Webern. Yet his homages are always heartfelt, and he always remains himself: truly the most comprehensive and wide-ranging musical genius of the twentieth century.

Rodrigo A Portrait
Includes music from various concertos such as Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasia para un gentilhombre, as well as orchestral and choral works, guitar solos, and piano pieces, presenting a vivid selection of Rodrigo’s compositions from 1923 until 1982.
Various Performers
2 CDs with 22 tracks of the music of Joaquin Rodrigo spanning his entire career plus detailed biographical essay by Graham Wade, richly illustrated with photographs. Joaquin Rodrigo (1901–1999) was a prolific composer whose remarkable guitar concerto, the famous Concierto de Aranjuez, brought Spanish music to the attention of a wide international public. Yet Rodrigo deserves appreciation for many masterpieces among his output of nearly 200 compositions. These CDs encompass a representative selection of his music, illustrating the immense variety and quality of the orchestral, choral and instrumental pieces written over the course of a long artistic career. Combined with an essay by Graham Wade, author of the first Rodrigo biography in the English language, this provides an excellent portrait of one of the greatest twentieth-century Spanish composers.

JS Bach Cantatas Vol 38
Falsche Welt dir trau ich nicht BWV52, Ich habe genung BWV82, Ich armer Mensch ich Sundenknecht BWV55, Bekennen will ich seinen Namen BWV58
Carolyn Sampson (soprano), Gerd Turk (tenor), Peter Kooij (bass), Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki (conductor)
The four cantatas on this recording come from 1726-1727, Bach’s fourth year in Leipzig. During this time Bach showed a preference for solo cantatas, entrusting the text to a single solo voice. Three of these cantatas are of this type, while the fourth (BWV58) is scored for two voices. The opening sinfonia of BWV52 is based on a preliminary version of the first Brandenburg Concerto. Ich habe genung is performed in the original bass version by Peter Kooij, while Carolyn Sampson interprets BWV52 and joins Kooij in the dialogue of the duet cantata BWV58. Gerd Turk performs the cantata for solo tenor. ‘In Suzuki's recordings the listener encounters a Bach full of elan and vitality...liveliness and impulsiveness, not to say spontaneity’ (klassik.com)

'For fire burning in snow is the effect of love' - the final line from Juan de Araujo's 'Dime amor' gives this remarkable disc its paradoxical title and conjures up the passion and dramatic contrasts that make it such a delight. Described as the greatest Latin American composer of the late 17th century, Araujo dominates the repertoitre on this CD although very little is known of his life. His 3-choir setting of Dixit Dominus is a dazzling display, Silencio is a ravishing 2-choir lullaby, while Fuego de amor calls for 4 choirs breathtakingly counterpoised.
