PIANO VIRTUOSITY & INTENSE POETRY Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 2 has a lyrical slow movement containing prominent solos for the violin and cello, effectively turning the work into a concerto for piano trio, and an explosive finale marked Allegro con fuoco. The two-movement Concert Fantasy, with its distinctive thematic ideas and colourful orchestration, including glockenspiel and tambourine, has been unaccountably neglected. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1 is also available on Naxos 8557257.

DELIGHTFUL SPANISH PIANO MUSIC The early compositions included here, Cancíon, Vals-Capricho, Cortejo de los gnomos and Mazurca, are clearly the work of an exceptional student, although they are written very much in a Romantic vein which Falla would later abandon, in favour of the overt nationalism that marks his mature work. For the Suite from El sombrero de tres picos (The Three Cornered Hat), Daniel Ligorio has edited the composer’s sketches and unfinished transcription in order to achieve an effect closer to the orchestral version.

PREMIERE RECORDINGS OF NORWEGIAN MUSIC Edvard Grieg’s idiom is firmly rooted in his country's folk music, especially his numerous short pieces. The Slatter, Norwegian folk dances and tunes originally played on the peasant violin (Hardangar fiddle), were orchestrated by Grieg. Although an excellent orchestrator himself, he often left this task to others, while modern arrangers such as Sven Nyhus have also copntributed. This collection includes the Norwegian Dances, Op. 35, Funeral March, Bridal Procession, and the Chopin-inspired, deeply emotional Ballade. The orchestral versions of Slatter and Ballade are world premiere recordings.

POST-WAR JAZZ CLASSICS Duke Ellington wrote thousands of compositions and arrangements for fifty years, led an orchestra that was constantly at the top of its field, developed his own distinctive piano style, and did all of this while constantly performing, recording, rehearsing and travelling. MUSIC FOR LONDON THEATRES Restoration England was a land of pleasures in which taverns and gambling dens were reopened, new theatres were built. Prominent dramatists such as Dryden and Shadwell adapted Shakespeare for contemporary tastes in collaboration with some of the finest composers of the time, including Pelham Humphrey, Giovanni Draghi, John Banister, James Hart, Matthew Locke and of course Henry Purcell. The latter's vocal music, whether irreverent or heart-breakingly beautiful, was scarcely matched by a native composer until the time of Benjamin Britten.
