While Vaughan Williams is a much loved composer, his symphonies remain less well known than they deserve to be, yet they contain some of his most moving and powerful music. A Sea Symphony (No 1) for soprano, baritone, chorus and orchestra sets poems by Walt Whitman, while A London Symphony (No 2) evokes the many moods of this great capital city. The Pastoral Symphony (No 3) draws on the composer's experiences as an ambulance volunteer during World War I. Symphony No 4 is, perhaps, his most dramatic, though No 5 returns to the mood of the Pastoral Symphony. The single-movement Symphony No 6 was composed towards the end of World War II and the years immediately following. Sinfonia Antartica, based on his haunting 1948 film score for Scott of the Antarctic, is the 7th in the series. The 8th uses a rich battery of percussion ('all the 'phones and 'spiels known to the composer') to remarkable effect and the 9th was originally inspired by Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Each Symphony shows a different aspect of Vaughan Williams' ever-evolving musical personality and this set is a true collector's item.

This fourth disc in the Naxos series of the complete Schumann Lieder focuses on settings of poems by Justinus Kerner, whose almost folk-song-like lyrics first captured Schumann’s imagination as early as 1828 in the five Jugend-Lieder. Schumann returned to the poems of Kerner in his ‘Year of Song’ (1839/40) with his Zwolf Lieder, Op. 35, of which Clara Schumann wrote in her diary: ‘He understands the texts so beautifully, more deeply than any other composer I know; none has his sensitivity’. The Op. 127 and 142 cycles, also from 1839/40, include settings of texts by Heine and Shakespeare, of which the most remarkable is Mein Wagen rollet langsam. Here the novel accompanying figure, as it alternates between stopping and starting, suggests an irregular jolting forward movement.

Chiefly, though, the recording features the original version of Ameriques, for a massive orchestra of 155 players, recorded immediately following a rare public performance at the Warsaw Philharmonic (only its second since the 1920s) as part of the 2005 Warsaw Autumn Festival.

Faure’s two cello sonatas are compact, beautifully written works whose musical language, with its many subtle changes of tonality and gift for melody, has been described as conveying ‘the power of tranquil thought’. Written in the summer of 1917, during the First World War, the neglected First Sonata begins with a troubled Allegro, followed by an eloquent Andante and a sparkling Finale. The C minor Andante of the Second Sonata has its origin in a Chant funebre commissioned for the celebration in May 1921 of the centenary of the death of Napoleon. This recital also includes an arrangement of the ever-popular song Apres un reve, as well as the virtuosic Papillon.

Now enjoying cult status since her ‘re-discovery’ 25 years ago, Hildegard von Bingen, the tenth child of an aristocratic family, entered a convent at the age of eight and spent the remainder of her eighty years as a nun as well as a mystic, the latter half as abbess of her own convent. Hildegard’s great musico-poetic collection was completed around the year 1150. Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum (Symphony of the Harmony of Heavenly Revelations) is a collection of 77 songs and one music drama. The subjects of these songs are an idiosyncratic collection of individuals and groups – the pieces included on this recording are variously addressed to the Creator, the Redeemer, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St John the Evangelist, Apostles, Confessors, and Martyrs.

Aaron Copland’s little-known but very beautiful opera The Tender Land takes place on a farm in the American South during the Depression. The composer later wrote, 'I was trying to give young American singers material that they do not often get in the opera house...The result was closer to musical comedy than grand opera.' The suite that Copland extracted from The Tender Land is in three movements, with the second and third linked without pause. The 1926 Piano Concerto, like Gershwin’s Concerto of the previous year, is a 1920s 'New York' piece - brassy, exuberant, ever confident in its bluesy swagger. Copland composed two sets of Old American Songs, originally for voice and piano but heard here transcribed for chorus and orchestra.

Ives Three Orchestral Sets

The works on this recording focus on a singular genre created by a singular composer. The kind of piece Charles Ives called a ‘set’ is usually a larger work made by putting together independently-written smaller pieces. The First Orchestral Set, variously titled Three Places in New England and A New England Symphony, is one of Ives’s great tributes to his roots. Put together around 1913-14 from material going back years, it is typically Ivesian in that each movement has an underlying program. Like the other sets, the Second has a slow-fast-slow pattern and a visionary hymn-based finale. The unfinished Third Orchestral Set was the only set Ives planned as a whole from the beginning. It may stand as the most profound discovery of the many and ongoing efforts to reconstruct Ives’s incomplete works. This is its first complete performance and recording.

John Corigliano has revisited his score for the 1997 film The Red Violin several times. In The Red Violin Caprices, content is allied to a technique making strenuous demands on the performer. The pensive Theme is identical in substance to that heard in the earlier Chaconne (Naxos 8559306), and its five variations range in style from the Paganinian virtuosity of the first, to the restrained ‘folk’ tinge of the third. Corigliano’s Violin Sonata is among his earliest acknowledged works, its final Allegro enhanced by some scintillating instrumental interplay. Coming from a very different musical background, and representing a very different musical aesthetic, Virgil Thomson’s music displays a skilful assimilation of Gallic clarity and an American-derived nostalgia, with hymn tunes and traditional songs often being evident. Celebrating his 80th birthday year in 2008, American composer James Cohn studied with Roy Harris, Wayne Barlow and Bernard Wagenaar, graduating from the Julliard School in 1950. Cohn’s first love is the symphony orchestra, and the works presented on this disc are like pages from a diary. The four movements of Symphony No 7 are essentially four landscape paintings in sound. Symphony No 2 is a musical equivalent to four scenes from a drama. Variations on ‘The Wayfaring Stranger’ is a memorial to two dear and generous friends who were like parents to the composer and the Waltz in D is essentially a bittersweet dance in waltz tempo.

Completed in 1887, Stanford’s ‘Irish’ Symphony enjoyed immediate and widespread success, continuing to be played well into the twentieth century. The ‘Irish’ subtitle indicates its frequent deployment of folk-tunes as melodic material, although the work never strays far from the Austro-German symphonic tradition. The 1905 Sixth Symphony, by contrast, received only two hearings before succumbing to an eighty-year oblivion. The subtitle, ‘In honour of the life-work of a great artist: George Frederick Watts’, is important: Watts (1817-1904) was among the most lauded British artists of his era and Stanford’s work, if not overtly programmatic, was influenced by instances of Watt’s legacy – for example the equestrian statue in Kensington Gardens, London.

Max Reger is regarded by many as the greatest German composer of organ music since Bach. Ireland Songs

Although John Ireland is best remembered for his orchestral works, his 91 songs convey a peculiarly English quality of emotion expressed through reserve. The many gems on this recording include the bitter-sweet Sea Fever (1913), with its yearning strophic melody sailing on an accompaniment that is varied with each verse, the dark, fatalistic Three Songs to Poems by Thomas Hardy and the heart-rending Her Song, one of Ireland’s most beautiful. Ireland’s failure to find love is perhaps best expressed in the bleak cycle Two Poems of AE Housman.

Haydn Violin Concertos

Of the nine violin concertos at one time ascribed to Haydn only four were genuine, and one of the four is lost. With their considerable use of the relatively higher register of the violin, chains of dotted notes, double stopping and ornamental figuration, the Concertos were written to showcase the considerable virtuosity of the principal violin in Haydn’s orchestra, Luigi Tomasini. Gold medallist of the 2006 Indianapolis International Violin Competition and recipient of several of the competition’s special awards, Augustin Hadelich has established himself as one of the most eloquent of the new generation of violinists.

Mendelssohn String Quintets Nos 1, 2

Mendelssohn’s musical precocity, both as a player and as a performer, manifested itself at a remarkably early age. In 1826, when he was only 17, Mendelssohn wrote not only his Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream but the first of his two string quintets. The String Quintet No. 2 followed 19 years later, in 1845, two years before his death. Despite the intervening years, the two Quintets are similar in style and form, with richly melodic and haunting slow movements and two wonderfully contrasting scherzos. It is interesting to compare the two String Quintets with the impressive Octet of 1825 (recorded on Naxos 8557270).

Haydn and the Earl of Abdingdon

Willoughby Bertie, Fourth Earl of Abingdon, was among the leading English musical amateurs in late 18th century London, a composer himself and a noted patron. He was particularly associated with Haydn's two visits to London in the 1790s, occasions reflected in some of the music included in the present recording, works by Haydn and by the Earl himself.

Charles Wood made an important contribution to Anglican church music, with liturgical settings that remain part of cathedral choral repertoire. Answering a request from Eric Milner-White, the then Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, Wood completed his setting of the St Mark Passion in August 1920. As with JS Bach’s inclusion of Lutheran chorales in his St John Passion, here the flow of the biblical narrative in English, interspersed with well-known hymns for choir and congregation, provides the key to the work’s success.

Kuhlau Piano Sonatas Vol 1

A close contemporary of Weber, the German-born Friedrich Kuhlau settled in Copenhagen, where he spent the greater part of his career as a composer, pianist and teacher. Kuhlau wrote a copious quantity of music for the piano, including a fine Piano Concerto reminiscent of early Beethoven, salon music and other works of varied technical difficulty. The Sonatinas and Sonatas ‘non difficiles’ featured on this disc were of practical use in teaching or for domestic music-making.
